Am supposed to be using this blog for thoughts on work issues. Feedback from the PPV that I submitted indicated that it would take far longer than the semester we have to research my ideas . My PPV posed the questions:
- How can we make customised IT training scalable, without employing more training staff?
- Do recipients of customised IT training accept a component of generic training as a pre-requisite to customised training?
- Is there a maximum proportion of customised / generic training that clients will happily accept and regard as meeting their specific requirements? (if so, approximately what proportions?)
Diane (lecturer) and I had a lengthy chat and the outcome was that I should instead focus on some of the planning issues at work... investigating leadership and group dynamics.
I have lots of problems trying to meet with key people to discuss the strategies we need to explore and develop to assist us in reaching our corporat goals. It's easy to get a few key players but often for the final decision making we need the boss' presence. The most difficult thing is getting the MD to attend meetings - often he's running so late that the other attendees simply must get back to work and the meeting is postponed.
I guess this is a typical problem in a small private company - time out for meetings is time away from "productive" work.
So my research line of inquiry will involve reading about team leadership, group dynamics. I'll also interview some people from other companies about how they get key players to a single meeting of length enough that decisions can be made. will discuss their experiences and solutions (if they have any).
At least the final report can be a work in progress - no conclusions necessarily required - as Diane told me "this is research - you don't know what you are going to discover" (paraphrase).
